Peacemaker

I talked to Bishop Cox not long ago and asked him what he remembered about Dad. They were about the same age He told me about the same thing as others had told me. He said that when they were doing something as a crowd of boys and there was any kind of trouble, Dad was always the peacemaker. He always tried to keep the crowd from having trouble with one another. He said he was usually able to straighten things out and he always admired Dad for this.

He told me about the time he and Dad went up the canyon after a load of wood. They pulled up an old tree, roots and all. When they began chopping the tree wood from the roots, they found half of a gold nugget. They looked for hours trying to find the other half of the nugget, but never did find it.

He remembered Dad with the big bobsleigh and gathering up the gang for an evening or afternoon of fun on the hard snow packed dirt roads. He remembers doin this before he or Dad were married.

The Ghost

Aunt Dortha said that Sam Jewkes, who lived just through the lot from Dad, was sitting out on the porch with his girlfriend one night. Sam and the girl could see something coming through the yard. It was tall and white. The white thing got right up to them, and Sam could tell that it was Dad. He said, "Where you off to Floyd?". When he spoke, it woke Dad up. There he stood in his underwear. When he looked at Sam and the girl, he realized he was walking in his sleep, and he jumped the fence and ran home.

Mom told me that Dad often walked in his sleep.

Funnies on Sunday

I don't remember many times when Dad was just around the house without being busy. While Mom was busy in the kitchen getting dinner, Dad would go in the little spare bedroom and lay on the bed with the Sunday paper. I soon caught on to this and as soon as he'd lay down, I'd hop on the bed and curl up beside him and coax him to read the funnies to me. He would read them all to me and then I'd want him to read them all again. The funnies were never quite as fun later in life as they were when Dad read them to me on Sunday afternoons.

Joseph & Jenn Zollinger

The Zollinger Family

Name

Jennifer Lynn--it was just a name my parents liked.

Joseph Matt--Joseph after his great-grandpa and Matt after his dad.

Birthplace

Jenn--Price, UT

Joseph--Logan, UT

Places you have lived

Jenn--Price, Logan, Ogden, and Layon

Joseph--Providence, Grace, ID, Bothwell, UT, Thatcher, UT, Boston, MA, Logan, Ogden, Layton

Places you have worked/What do you want to be when you grow up?

Jenn---My first job was in the dentist office that my mom works for. I helped for a couple of hours after school each day with the filing. After that I worked in a local bookstore, the special ed department adivising office at USU, and North Park Elementary in North Logan, teaching special ed preschool. When I was a kid, I always wanted to be a teacher because I thought it would be fun to write on a chalkboard everyday. As I got older, I found that I really enjoyed science and biology and considered a career in the medical field. I applied and was accepted to nursing school, but made a last minute change to special education after having an "a-ha moment" during a conference talk. I love the degree that I have, and hope to someday work in the field again after my kids are older, but I still have a desire to maybe go back one day and get that nursing degree!

Joseph--The list is long, so these are just the highlights: The family farm kept him busy as a kid, and after his mission to Boston he worked at Staples, Subway, USU Space Dynamics Lab, YouthTrack (a group home for troubled youth), Technisys as a drafter, and he is currently employed as a drafter/designer at an engineering firm called CEntry. He really enjoys his job and plans to stick around there for quite a while.

Hobbies & interests

Jenn--Most of my spare time is spent on my calling as the first counselor in the YW's program and volunteering in the NICU. I've made a great group of friends there and have really enjoyed it. I recently participated in the March of Dimes March for Babies to spread awareness and raise money for research to prevent premature birth. I also enjoy coming up with fix-ups that my house "needs" and ordering Joseph around to get them done :) This year I set a goal to read 10,000 pages, thinking it would be easily attainable. It's not. We're nearly halfway through the year and I'm not quite halfway to my goal, so I need to find more time to read!

Joseph--Racquetball, home improvement projects, going out-and-about with my wife and being outdoors

Tell us what you have been up to since the last reunion, and any future plans you have between now and the next reunion.

We've had a lot of changes since we last saw everyone! Just before the last reunion, Joseph got a new job. We sold our home in Ogden and bought another in Layton. We've been working on fixing it up this spring and we're *almost* done with the latest and biggest project! We also had two new additions to our family! After 8 weeks of tedious bedrest, Owen and Emmy joined our family 8 weeks early on February 15, 2007. Twins has been a lot of work, but even more fun! We can't imagine our family without them!

Ryan just finished his first year of preschool and will turn 4 in July. He's full of energy and is very curious. Sometimes I have to ask him not to talk anymore because I think my head will explode with all the questions he is throwing my way! He has an imaginary friend named Duggin that hangs out at our house quite often. Ryan has been a great big brother and can't wait for "his babies" to get a little bigger so that he can play more with them!

Emmy is 16 months and just started walking! She's a very affectionate little girl and we love all of the hugs and snuggles that she gives away. She's quick to laugh and smile and is pleasant almost all of the time. She has lots to say and is always jabbering....sometimes we're even sure that we catch little phrases here and there, letting us know that she's one smart cookie!

Owen is 16 months old and wishes he were an only child. He is quite demanding of our time and attention and can throw quite the tantrum when someone else is getting it! When he has his happy moments, he has a smile that could melt your heart. He loves to wrestle with Ryan and is also very curious. I'm sure that they will be great buddies as they grow up! Owen loves to sleep and you'll never see a bigger smile on his face than at naptime and bedtime.

Little Fly Upon the Wall

Years ago, with nothing but a fly-strip (a strip of sticky paper that hung on the door, porch, fence, etc.) and a wire fly-swatter, we had a hard time getting rid of the hordes of flies that persistently pestered us. We did a great deal of canning and drying vegetables and fruits years ago, and the smell of the hot corn or other foods drew the flies like crazy.

Mom was very easily agitated by these pesky flies and did her best to keep them away from food and out of the house. She would take a dish towel and wave it around the door when anyone would go in or out of the house or when it was necessary to open the door for any reason. This would help a great deal and if we were slow getting through the door, we would sometimes get a good swat on the behind with the towel to hurry us a bit.

In spite of the faithfulness of Mom and her dish towel, some of the little black pests managed to sneak into the house. As a result, Mom went around the house with a fly swatter in her hand.
The other day, I picked up my fly swatter and swatted a fly that was being very pesky. For some reason, at that moment, I thought of my Mom and I repeated a little poem she used to say at times as she killed the flies in the house. I guess I hadn't said that little poem for many, many years and my grandkids, the ones who were there, laughed and laughed when they heard the poem Mom taught me long ago. Let me share Mom's poem with you:

Little fly upon the wall,
Ain't you got no friends at all?
Ain't you got no Papa?
Ain't you got no Mama?
Ain't you got no home?
Poor little fly,
Want to go to God?
